Happy Monday!  I don’t know about you, but I’ve already got a list a mile long of new ideas and old favorites for my holiday baking…and I expect it will only be more difficult to narrow this list down as November wanes on and holiday recipes explode all over the Interwebs.  Now truthfully, I may not be able to help you narrow down your list but how about a little help with the ever-expanding expense of holiday baking?

King Arthur Flour has long been one of my favorite resources for baking supplies and every time I’ve stepped foot in the Baker’s Store in Norwich, VT, I’ve been transported to a baker’s heaven.  So….to kick-off my “Favorite Things Holiday Giveaway” series that you may or may not have seen on Facebook, I feel like you need to know about the greatness that is KAF via a few of my favorite King Arthur products, especially if you give away food gifts at the holidays and a few possibly unknown facts…

  1. Did you know that the KAF website supports a 2000+ recipe collection with recipes that are tested in their own test-kitchens.  I’ve made and blogged a few of these recipes…and have a ton more on my t0-make list…and you will too so go there now. 🙂
  2. Ever need a baking question answered while you’re in the middle of making a recipe with no one around to ask it to?  Well, how about using KAF’s free Baking Hotline?
  3. Have you been trying to bake gluten-free?  I’m definitely no expert in this field, but I’ve heard awesome things from gluten-free bakers about KAF’s gluten-free line of flours, mixes, and recipes!
  4. For more information, recipes, and sales/promotions, be sure to sign up for KAF’s emails (I get these emails and I promise they don’t bombard you with emails!) or follow them on Facebook and/or Twitter.

So…here’s what you can win in this giveaway:

(1) Set of Holiday Gift Tags and Ribbons (no more rooting around for pretty food-related gift tags!)

(1) 24oz bag of Baker’s Cinnamon Filling (for cinnamon buns or cinnamon swirl bread)

(1) 16oz bag of Malted Milk Powder (just ’cause you’ll love it as much as I do)

(1) 5lb bag of the famous King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour, AND…

(1) $50 Gift Card (oh yeah baby!!) — This is an e-card so you won’t have to wait for it to be shipped!

To enter this giveaway here are The Rules:

  1. Answer this question in the comment section of this post (and only this post):  What is your favorite holiday cookie?
  2. Only one entry per person will be accepted and you MUST include a valid email address with your comment.
  3. If you don’t see your comment post right away, please don’t post another comment.  The delay happens because I moderate all comments.
  4. You have until Thursday November 17, 2011 at 11:59pm Eastern to enter this giveaway.
  5. One winner will be chosen by that handy-dandy random number generator we’re all familiar with.
  6. The winner will notified on Friday November 18, 2011.  If you do not respond to my email within 48 hours, another winner will be chosen (also at random).
  7. Giveaway is open to entries with U.S. addresses only.

Disclosure:  King Arthur Flour is helping to sponsor this giveaway by graciously donating the 5lb bag of flour and the shipping costs associated with sending the flour.  All of the other products and the gift card are given by yours truly.

My favorite cookie is a simple sugar cookie with frosting. The recipes, though, are from my grandma. We always have a cookie-bake day every year with family and make over 500 cookies to be sent home with the participating members (and also donate some to nursing homes). My grandma also freezes some and pulls them out for the 4th of July. There is nothing that beats the memories of making this particular cookie and frosting! I hope I win!

Hi – At 71 years young my favorite holiday cookie are Molasses Crinkles! A sweet childhood memory. I still make them. These days, many of the younger folks have not been exposed to them. Our church has a fund raiser cookie walk and when I make these cookies they disappear once they try them. Molasses Cookie Crinkles are a blast from the Christmases past. This inexpensive cookie could easily be made during World War II when the economy went down and baking supplies were short. I too am a King Arthur flour fan! Never thought about checking out their web site. Nice blog!

Now, my favorite holiday cookie is the Mexican Hot Chocolate cookies my husband and I invented together. (Yeah, I know there are recipes out there for this, but we hadn’t seen any of them yet when we came up with it.)

My favorite holiday cookies are: Swedish Tea Cakes.

They remind me of my mother-in-law, who went all out baking cookies for Christmas. It was all right if you took the last one, because there was always an enormous tin of them. She wanted to make sure that everyone got as many as they wanted in her family of six children, plus grandchildren, plus in-laws. She was a very generous woman, in many ways beyond baking, all the rest of the year as well.

  • November 16, 2011 at 11:28 AM

My fave cookie is a star-shaped cookie from my childhood that my bff’s family always made. LOVED those cookies, aw they bring back memories. They had this amazing frosting and nuts sprinkled on top too. They were always so soft too. I need that recipe!

My favorite cookie is a thumbprint cookie and the indentation is filled with a cream cheese/coconut/pecan combination, then you drip a thin line of chocolate back and forth across the cookie. I’ve made it for about 15 years and still love it. I also like the same cookie but with thinned apricot jam in the middle and vanilla frosting drip across the cookie. I hope I win because I do love KAF!!

  • November 16, 2011 at 11:41 AM

This is a tough one! I guess I’d say my great-grandmother’s chocolate gobs (or whoopie pies)! Absolutely LOVE them! 🙂

    November 16, 2011 at 11:50 AM

I just saw your blog through a link on http://annies-eats.net/

A favorite holiday cookie is little raindeer faces: scoop a ball of cookie dough (your favorite one-color dough, like peanutbutter, vanilla, snickerdoodle, chocolate….) and add broken pretzels for the antlers, a red m&m for the nose, and two small cholocate chips for the eyes. They are cute and sculptural! OMG I just did an image search for these and there are so many cute variations!!!

  • Sarahanne
    November 16, 2011 at 12:56 PM

Holidays always mean sugar cookies to me. I made them with my grandparents who always had a big spread set up- egg washes, sugars of all colors, edible silver, red, green balls, sprinkles etc. And more cookie cutters than you could ever imagine… I always went straight for the cookie cutter lips because they were so silly. Now my mom has all the cookie cutters and it’s just not Christmas until we get to make some sugar cookies.

  • Sammy Jo
    November 16, 2011 at 12:57 PM

My favorite Christmas cookie isn’t a cookie at all! My family makes a ton of sweets around that time of year, but not many of them are cookies. I have however, always looked forward to what my family calls “peanut-butter candy” which is pretty much just peanut butter wrapped lovingly in a powdered sugary mixture into a little pinwheel. It is the best stuff ever!

  • November 16, 2011 at 1:19 PM

Oh, this is easy as pie….gingerbread cookies are my favorite to bake, decorate and give over the holidays. Fragrant gingerbread also makes the house smell yummy! KAF has a great recipe for both the cookies and the icing.

I love the eggnog version of sugar cookies (which means there is nutmeg & cinnamon in the sugar cookie dough and then the icing is made with eggnog as the liquid instead of plain milk). In the past few years, my friends and I have very much enjoyed making these into Disgruntled Cookies (look here for examples of disgruntled cookies: http://wintersnowgypsy.blogspot.com/2009/12/disgruntled-holiday-cookies.html).
