Pizza Seasoning vs Italian Seasoning
Pizza seasoning and Italian seasoning are very similar to each other. In a pinch, they can be used interchangeably.
Many pizza seasoning mixes I’ve seen include all of the Italian seasoning ingredients plus fennel and paprika. The fennel mimics the flavor of sausage and the paprika gives the mix a little color and pop of savory flavor.

How to Store Homemade Spice Mixes
I always keep my homemade spice mixes in airtight jars. I use either Weck jars with rubber seals or one of the many jam jars that I wash and reuse a thousand times after finishing off the jam.
PRO TIP!
It’s best practice to store your spices in a dark space like a cabinet, drawer, or pantry. Long term exposure to light will cause your spices to expire faster.

FAQs
- Do I need to use ALL of the herbs and spices in the ingredients list? Feel free to change up what you use in this spice mix recipe. I like the way the mix works as I’ve written it but you can skip ingredients such as red pepper flakes and dried marjoram if you don’t like or don’t have them on hand. And if you really love garlic and basil, you can add extra of those two!
- How long will this spice mix keep for? Store properly (airtight container in a dark space), this spice mix will stay fresh for a couple of months. The length of time will also depend on how old your dried herbs and spices are when you make the mixture.
- Is this a salt free Italian seasoning mix? It sure is! I don’t add salt to the seasoning mix because all of my recipes need different amounts of salt and I don’t want to oversalt a recipe due to the salt in the seasoning mix.
- Is Italian seasoning gluten free? My recipe certainly is! Because the only ingredients in this recipe are dried herbs and spices, there are no thickeners or added preservatives or flavors that could add gluten to a seasoning mix.
- Are the red pepper flakes essential to the spice mix? No, they are not. If you want a little “kick” in your Italian seasoning, leave the red pepper flakes in the recipe. Otherwise, you can leave this ingredient out completely or reduce the amount you use.
